OTC Products

Liquid Acids

OTC acids for wart removal are an effective and commonly used option. The most frequent ones include salicylic acid and trichloroacetic acid.

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic that gradually dissolves keratin, a protein that is part of the wart and the surrounding skin. It is available in different concentrations, usually between 17% and 40%.

TCA (trichloroacetic acid) is a stronger acid than salicylic acid and works by burning the wart. It is generally used for more difficult-to-treat warts.

Podophyllin is a plant-based resin that destroys genital wart tissue. Podofilox contains the same active compound, but you can apply it at home.

Patience and consistency: Wart removal can take several weeks or even months.

Protection of the surrounding skin: Apply petroleum jelly or a barrier cream around the wart to protect healthy skin.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a common and effective treatment for removing warts. It uses extremely low temperatures to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue.

It is highly effective, especially for common and plantar warts.

Liquid nitrogen is used, which is applied directly to the wart. This freezes the wart cells and causes their destruction.

In the following days, the blister dries up and the wart falls off. This can take one to two weeks.

A burning or itching sensation may be felt during and after the treatment.

Blister formation is common. Avoid touching, scratching, or opening the blisters.

Pads/Bands

These pads/bands generally contain salicylic acid, which is a keratolytic agent that helps break down hardened skin and warts over time. Salicylic acid exfoliates the upper layers of the skin, removing the wart layer by layer. Treatment usually lasts several weeks, depending on the size and resistance of the wart.

Soaking the wart in warm water for a few minutes can help soften it.

Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the patch.

Leave the patch in place for the time indicated in the product instructions, which can range from a few hours to 24 hours.

It may cause redness, itching, or a burning sensation.

Stimulate the immune system

This method uses solutions to stimulate the immune system to fight viral warts.
